SC issues notice to Centre on plea seeking ban on illegal betting apps

The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to the Centre over a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a complete ban on illegal betting apps and a regulatory framework for online gaming and fantasy sports in India. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and N.K. Singh sought the Union Government’s response but refrained from issuing notices to state governments at this stage.

The petition, filed by a self-identified social activist and president of a global peace initiative, argued that the proliferation of unregulated betting apps disguised as fantasy sports is harming Indian youth and vulnerable citizens. The plea called for comprehensive central legislation, citing the absence of uniformity in gambling laws across Indian states.

Referring to an FIR registered earlier this year in Telangana against 25 celebrities and influencers who promoted betting apps, the petitioner also cited tragic incidents, including 24 suicides reportedly linked to online betting debt in Telangana. The petition contended that these platforms exploit users by masquerading as skill-based games while effectively functioning as gambling services.

The petitioner urged the court to safeguard public interest and youth welfare by banning such platforms outright or ensuring stringent national-level regulation. The court has now asked the Centre to respond to the plea, and the matter will be heard in due course.
